The Formula is a suspense thriller that starts with a brutal murder on Ares, a large space station orbiting Mars in the year 2094. Doctor Leif Johanson and his daughter, Ingrid, have discovered the ‘fountain of youth’. It’s a new anti-aging drug, each vial worth $5 million denom on the black market. The drug can regenerate living cells and make anyone young again. There’s just one problem. A powerful and ruthless drug producer named Ivan Hellstrom wants the discovery for himself. He tries to eliminate all those who get in his way. He murders the doctor, kidnaps Ingrid and steals the formula. One man opposes him, aging Homicide Detective, Jack Helms. Jack has to rescue the daughter, bring the drug producer to justice and earn a second chance at life.

It was an easy read & intteresting to think how crime might be solved in the future as well as possible advancements.

As I have read several books by Don Vieselli already, I enjoyed "The Formula" as well.
It was a bit different from the others I have read, but still a good read.
I screened this book for its suitability for young readers. Parents don't need to worry about their childrens minds being bruised by this book. They can sleep right through it.
Imagine TV story, with a stereotypical villian and his emotionless evil henceman, a beautiful woman and a good guy, like most of the episodes of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. Set it in a boring universe, where the only places you can find privacy are small private islands, where travel between locales is by bus at night and long distance transportation is dirt cheap and easy, but inexplicably everyone is desperate to live longer. Change the buses into spaceships, the woman a scientist's daughter hiding her deceased fathers' treasure, and the hero a former Chicago police officer who moved to Mars, an old man ready to retire. Describe Mars as dusty. Stop imagining, that's this book.
Like all of Mr Viecelli's stories, this is a predictable potboiller that is barely set in reality, using just enough factoids to set each scene, and it is written for 'tweens with weak science educations. If you are looking for something to kill a dreary,rainy afternoon, this is it. If you are looking for a book that stimulates your child's mind with possibilities, adventure or the unexpected, something to make them think, look elsewhere.
Science plays NO part in this story. It is set in a cardboard world. Its secret treasures being a chemical compound discovered by a medical researcher and documentation for a patent, could have equally well been an Aztec tomb, a deposit of a transuranic element and a map. (and have been in other minor variations by Mr Viecelli.)
The setting on Mars is totally unrealistic, not because manned occupation isn't possible, but because of the way it is portrayed. Having long term Mars residents taking 2 month trips to Earth to hide from bad guys, without regard to economics or need for adjustment to a 250% change in gravity interferes with the narrative. The story would have worked as well and more plausibly if set in Miami, the Carribean and any western European country.
I enjoyed The Formula very much and will read more of Don Viecellisl book's.
